The Babe Zaharias is a prestigious event in memory of Babe Didrikson Zaharias (26/6/11-27/9/56). She was an American athlete who excelled in golf, basketball, baseball and track and field. She won two gold medals in track and field at the 1932 Summer Olympics, before turning to professional golf and winning 10 LPGA major championships. She is widely regarded as one of the greatest athletes of all time.
The 2019 Babe Zaharias golf Tournament was held at The Musselburgh Golf Club on Monday 19th August and funds raised was in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. The competition took place in somewhat mixed weather conditions, ranging from torrential downpours with high winds to dry with a light breeze.
2019 saw Midlothian winners in both the scratch and handicap event. The winner of the scratch prize and The Babe Zaharias Trophy was Rachael Livingstone from Baberton. Last year’s winner Leanne Wilson was runner up. The winner of the handicap prize and The Ultraplast Trophy was Helen Warnock from Harburn. Many congratulations to both Midlothian players. Some great raffle prizes were on offer on the day and Rachael Livingstone won a four ball for Gullane no2 and Caroline Kinnaird from Glencorse won 12 Free 500ml Cartons of Ice Cream or Sorbet from S Luca (One per Month for 12 Months from August 2019) – mmmm lovely.
The event in 2020 will be run by East Lothian Ladies County Golf Association and it will be on Monday 17th August at Muirfield Golf Club. Entries will open early June 2020 and entry forms will be available via the East Lothian Ladies Golf website.
